Barbaro, the colt which had his right hind leg shattered at the Preakness, is showing excellent signs of recovery. The Kentucky Derby winner suffered an injury that put his life in danger for several days and abruptly ended up his career as a race champion.
The horse received general anesthesia in order to replace his leg’s cast, and was later led to a pool recovery at the School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania. The first cast had been placed during surgery on May 21.
Doctors say his leg looks excellent and the incision is healing perfectly. The radiographs show all of the implants remain unchanged. The wound is forming callus as expected, or even better.
Barbaro will stay in intensive care at the Veterinary Medicine Center until his full recovery.
