Sir Percy won the Vodafone Derby at Epsom on Saturday in one of the closest finishes in the history of the Derby. The colt, ridden by jockey Martin Dwyer, beat Dragon Dancer, Dylan Thomas and Hala Bek.
Sir Percy had a brilliant unbeaten two-year campaign but suffered a training accident during the winter that hindered his preparation for the season. The horse came back for the 2,000 Guineas but made a poor race. Now he seems to be fully recovered.
“It was a rough race and I had to go where I was getting a run”, said jockey Dwyer. Trainer Marcus Tregoning confessed that he initially felt Sir Percy had finished second. "I must say it was so close and such a rush to the line I thought maybe we'd been beaten by Hala Bek", he explained.
Dragon Dancer finished second and Hala Bek finished third. Second favorite, Horatio Nelson, was put down after a double break and dislocation.
