Online Casino Gambling in the U.S.

The gambling history of the U.S. is quite interesting and unique. After the commercialization of the internet in 1995, the first online gambling game site Intertops.com, was live in action in the year 1996 followed by hundreds of such online gambling websites. By the year 2006, there were thousands of such gambling sites operating when president George Bush enacted Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) which brought several restrictions to the online gamblers in the USA.

What is the UIGEA LAW?

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) is United States legislation regulating online gambling. It was added as Title VIII to the SAFE Port Act (found at 31 U.S.C. §§ 53615367) which otherwise regulated port security. The UIGEA “prohibits gambling businesses from knowingly accepting payments in connection with the participation of another person in a bet or wager that involves the use of the Internet and that is unlawful under any federal or state law (source- Wikipedia).

This law indicated that accepting or processing payments made by a player to an online casino is illegal.

Where is online gambling legal in the US?

Currently, online gambling is legal in four states in the U.S. These regulated states are New Jersey, Delaware, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. For gambling online, you need to be within the borders of these states. Before you sign in any online casino, you need to check the laws of the area you live in as they are highly regulated. If you fail to do so and you get involved in non-state regulated online gambling, you might be violating serious laws and can be charged.

Legal online casino operators make sure to check the physical location of the player so do not indulge in changing the IP address due to security reasons as this affects your real location identification and you might be rejected by the online casino as your location may not be within the legal playing area.

Is it legal to gamble online in other states?

We cannot answer this question with a simple yes or no. There is nothing black or white about this law but mostly it is a grey area. The legality of internet gambling law is quite complicated. Some countries have legalized it completely while a few others have legalized it partially, others have banned it, and remaining have not yet addressed this matter.

The United States has no federal law which prevents or bans internet gambling, however, each state has a different law, so we leave it to you to do thorough research about the online gambling rules in your area.

The Future of Online Casinos in the USA:
