Trainer Todd Pletcher has announced that Super Saver will come back for the second jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, on 15th May. The colt will return only two week after his victory in the Kentucky Derby and it seems he’ll have a lot of company since many trainers of the Derby runners have confirmed their presence too.
Pletcher admitted he is breaking one of his rules since he usually gives his horses at least five weeks off after a race. “Usually my horses are wiped out after a big race but Super Saver has been energetic since the Derby,” he commented. “He has been hungry and active in his stall and enthusiastic during morning jogs with exercise rider Kevin Willey.”
After winning the Derby, the Preakness Stakes remains as the only leg of the Triple Crown Pletcher has not been able to win. He’s 0-for-4 at the Baltimore track and he was the winner of the 2007 Belmont with the filly Rags to Riches. Pletcher headed the Kentucky Derby being 0-for-24.
Kentucky Derby runner-up Ice Box will not run the Preakness but will go directly to the Belmont Stakes, according to Nick Zito. “I will not make a decision until next week,” Zito commented. “But to run the horse off a six-week layoff and to see him have to check three times makes it hard to run back in two weeks and then again three weeks later. You never say never, but it looks doubtful.”
